Each year, communities across the globe mark World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, a day dedicated to remembering those who have been killed or seriously injured in traffic crashes. It is a day of mourning, reflection, and solidarity, but also a call to action to prevent future tragedies.
Traffic violence is not inevitable. It is preventable.
And on this day, we come together to make that truth visible.
Honoring Alexia Elizabeth Hyneman
This year, Propel ATL has been invited by the Hyneman family to join them in honoring the life of Alexia Elizabeth Hyneman, who was killed while biking home from a school performance at age 14. Alexia was a bright and beloved student, artist, and friend whose life continues to inspire action for safer streets.
A permanent memorial was recently installed at the corner of 10th & Monroe, where Alexia was struck. The memorial is a place to remember her life, reflect on the devastating impact of unsafe streets, and recommit to building a city where such tragedies never happen again.
On Sunday, we will gather with her family at this site to honor her memory and to stand with all families who have experienced loss due to traffic violence.
Relaunching the Atlanta Chapter of Families for Safe Streets
This World Day of Remembrance also marks an important moment for our city: the relaunch of the Atlanta chapter of Families for Safe Streets (AFSS).
Families for Safe Streets is a national movement of people who have lost loved ones or been injured in traffic crashes. Members turn grief into action by demanding meaningful change and supporting one another through trauma.
The Atlanta chapter, led by survivors, families, and community advocates, is rebuilding as a space for healing, connection, and collective advocacy. In the months ahead, we will begin outreach, support services, and member recruitment to ensure Atlantans impacted by traffic violence have a voice, a community, and a platform for change.
We are honored to share this relaunch alongside the Hyneman family and to uplift survivor voices as we push for a safer, more compassionate transportation system.
