Bike Clubs forming at Atlanta Public School Campuses

Spring is in the air and schools are activating bike clubs in campuses all over the map here in Atlanta Public Schools. ABC recognizes that shifting mindsets of youth will change the world. Of note are these three APS Bike Clubs.

Thomasville Heights Elementary School is launching its safe bicycling program with after-school programs in April for 10-15 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Students will learn the basics from ABC's Stephen Spring and a community member. The school is also engaging students and families at next month's Atlanta Streets Alive Southside.

At King Middle School, The BRAG Dream Team is launching and conducting bike safety for middle school students. This will restore the once vibrant club while building on the success King students have had in participating in group rides in Atlanta and across the state of Georgia with BRAG. Dream Team coaches, including James Tyler and the West Side Bike Champs, are pitching the club to the school through its All-Stars program on March 8th.

The students at Grady High School are forming to not only increase their personal safety skills and participate in rides, but also to affect city planning and policy. Students at this club attended the Monroe Drive/Boulevard Complete Streets Public Meeting on February 28th at Big Bethel AME Church.

ABC is supporting these and other pilots. As we and APS build on our partnership, we anticipate seeing bike safety units become an actual part of the school curriculum as we see in this video celebrating Washington DC's groundbreaking program.
