Propel ATL is pleased to announce it has received a $96,581.97 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) with federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The grant supports community education efforts to improve bicycle safety and reduce crashes and injuries of bikers and other vulnerable road users.
Propel ATL’s bike education program reaches hundreds of Atlantans with a wide range of biking needs and abilities, from “True Beginner” classes for adults and children just learning to ride, to “City Cycling” classes for bike commuters looking to navigate the urban landscape safely, to customized “Get There by Bike” classes for small groups looking to navigate to a particular location.
According to the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, there was an average of 25 bicyclist fatalities in traffic crashes each year between 2018-2022. In 2022, there were 29 bicyclist fatalities on Georgia roadways, an increase from the 15 bicyclist fatalities in 2021. While safer street design plays the largest role in preventing crashes like these, Propel Atlanta’s bicycle safety classes also help people gain the knowledge and skills to reduce bicycle crashes and create safer streets for everyone.
“Thanks to this grant, we are able to provide life-saving bike safety and skills training to hundreds of Atlantans as part of our larger mission to transform our streets into safe, inclusive, and thriving spaces for people to ride, walk, and roll,” said Propel ATL Executive Director Rebecca Serna.
"Part of the GOHS mission is to assist in the implementation of programs and campaigns designed to prevent crashes and eliminate traffic deaths on our roads," said Allen Poole, Director of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. "GOHS will continue to develop new partnerships and continue existing ones in order to create, refine and implement safety programs designed to help our state and nation reach our goal of zero traffic deaths."
The grant period for this award is October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025.
