MARTA’s NextGen Bus Network: a step toward transit that works for everyone

Imagine a transit system where buses arrive on time, routes make sense, and everyone—regardless of income or location—can get to work, school, or a doctor’s appointment with ease. This isn’t just a dream; it’s the vision behind MARTA’s NextGen Bus Network Redesign.

At Propel ATL, we’ve heard the stories. Riders stranded by late buses. Parents juggling work and childcare around unreliable service. Seniors and people with disabilities navigating inaccessible stops. For years, we’ve been listening, gathering input, and advocating for a bus network that works for everyone.

Now, the time has come. After years of study and community feedback, a draft of MARTA’s NextGen Bus Network Redesign is rolling out, marking a potentially transformational moment for public transit in Atlanta.

Why This Redesign Matters

The redesign is more than a technical update—it’s about rethinking how transit serves our communities. It’s a chance to improve access to jobs, reduce travel times, and build a network that reflects the needs of all riders, particularly those who rely on MARTA the most.

But this redesign will only succeed if it aligns with the values and priorities of the people it serves. That’s where you come in! Now is the time for public feedback. This is the moment to ask critical questions and ensure the network meets the goals of equity, accessibility, reliability, and frequency.

Learn more about the draft network

Earlier this year, the MARTA board voted to prioritize more frequent bus routes to minimize wait times to serve more riders. The proposed network also includes more direct routes, on-demand ride service for areas where an existing route may have been cut, and better timing for bus connections.

What Should We Be Asking?

As MARTA seeks public input on the proposed changes, let’s focus what matters most:

  • Fleet Capacity and Ridership:

    • Is MARTA's current fleet capable of accommodating increased ridership without causing service disruptions?
  • Outreach Strategy:

    • What outreach plans are in place to inform and engage everyday riders about the redesign?
    • How will internal teams and external contractors (consultants, contracted staff) coordinate efforts during the outreach phase?
  • Operator Engagement:

    • What will operator outreach entail during the implementation phase?
    • How will operators be prepared for the changes introduced by the redesign?
  • Job Accessibility:

    • What types of employment opportunities will become more accessible due to the redesign?
    • Are details regarding job sectors, compensation, and educational requirements available?
  • Success Metrics:

    • What metrics will MARTA use to evaluate the success of the bus network redesign?
    • How will these metrics be measured and reported?
