Walk ATL Oakland City

About Walk ATL – Oakland City

Walk ATL is Propel ATL’s neighborhood-centered program that supports residents in identifying pedestrian safety challenges and leads them through planning, design, and action to transform their streets with community-driven solutions.

In Oakland City, neighbors came together to explore ways to make walking safer and more comfortable along key streets like Merrill Avenue and Oakland Drive. This included collecting data, conducting a neighborhood walk audit, holding workshops, and developing a safety action plan.

A key part of this work is tactical urbanism, a community-led, low-cost, short-term approach to testing changes in public space that can lead to longer-term improvements. Tactical urbanism projects help residents and city agencies explore what works, build support, and make immediate safety improvements while longer-term infrastructure is planned.

The Walk ATL – Oakland City timeline below shows how this neighborhood’s efforts progressed from planning in 2023 to the implementation of a tactical urbanism project in 2026.
