Earlier this month, a life was lost on Campbellton Road — another preventable death on one of Atlanta’s deadliest corridors. We still don’t know their name.
Since January 2025, five people walking or biking have been killed on this road alone:
-
January 30, 2025 — A 68-year-old pedestrian was killed
-
February 24, 2025 — A 39-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run
-
February 12, 2026 — A 26-year-old pedestrian was killed
-
March 28, 2026 — A 65-year-old pedestrian was killed by an impaired driver
-
June 9, 2026 — A 65-year-old bicyclist was killed by a delivery truck
Often we don’t hear much about these crashes, in part because the people affected are not prioritized in our society. Maybe they are unhoused, undocumented, or relatively unknown. The end result is these fatalities are all too easily overlooked.
At Propel ATL, we’re honored to participate in a group trying to bring visibility to these crashes and uncover the underlying street conditions that contribute to some 79 people killed by car drivers each year in the City of Atlanta. (79 is the average over the last five years according to the City’s Vision Zero dashboard).
That group is the Fatal Crash Review Commission, created by the Atlanta City Council in 2023 to bring agencies together to review fatal crashes and recommend safety improvements. At the most recent meeting on June 17, 2026, we took a close look at the first three months of 2026. Of the nine people killed, three were on Campbellton Road.

Here’s how the Commission works: the ATLDOT Vision Zero Program Manager prepares a report for each meeting with detailed information on every fatal crash. There’s a presentation to go over what happened, then the Commission Members ask questions and make comments.
At Propel ATL, we strongly support the short-term recommendations for Campbellton Road shown below, especially reducing the number of lanes and adding pedestrian refuge islands.
Campbellton has long been a deadly street in our city. We urged the City and MARTA to address the high speeds and risk for people waiting for the bus, walking, or biking back in 2016 when it was planning the first sales tax for transportation.
Today, we continue to urge leaders to make the safety improvements that are so clearly needed, so we won’t still be losing lives on Campbellton Road ten years from now.
