A New Bike & Roll Lane on 14th Street: A Community Milestone for Safer Streets

Propel ATL gathered with neighbors, commuters, and advocates on October 21 to celebrate the new bike & roll lane on 14th Street, installed by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT).

The grassroots ribbon-cutting event recognized a community-driven milestone in expanding Atlanta’s network for people biking, scooting, and rolling, while also highlighting the continued need for safe, connected bike and roll routes throughout the city.

Early measurements suggest that vehicle speeds on 14th Street have decreased since the lane’s installation. Before this project, the majority of drivers traveled over 37 mph, but now, most drivers are traveling between 31 and 37 mph. These preliminary observations offer an encouraging indication of potential safety benefits.

The new lane reflects the efforts of neighbors, commuters, and advocates who pushed for this addition to Atlanta’s bike & roll network, including our team at Propel ATL and the Home Park Community Improvement Association.

“Every addition to Atlanta’s bike & roll network is an opportunity to make it safer and easier for people to get where they need to go, plus they make sidewalks safer by preserving them for people walking and using wheelchairs,” said Rebecca Serna, our Executive Director. “While this is a milestone worth celebrating, we’ll continue working toward a connected network that supports safe, accessible travel throughout the city."

"The bike lane on 14th Street makes the parks, museums, restaurants, and other amenities in Midtown and West Midtown more accessible to me and my family,” said Aubrey Knudson, a neighborhood resident and community member. “We're excited to explore more now that we won't have to deal with traffic or parking!"
