Pro Tips for Atlanta Streets Alive

Want to rock Streets Alive like a boss? Here are some pro tips from your friends at the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition!

Pro Tip #1- Sunscreen

Planning on being outside this beautiful Sunday afternoon? Sunscreen is a must! We love soaking up rays as much anyone, but want to ensure everyone is being responsible and sunburn free. We also recommend wide brimmed hats, parasols, enough sunglasses to cover your entire body ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, hey you do you (as long as you're wearing sunscreen!).

Pro Tip #2- Shoes

Wear comfortable and durable shoes. Do your feet a favor and wear a pair that you feel comfortable walking and biking in. We highly recommend something close-toed.

Pro Tip #3- Make a Friend

Atlanta Streets Alive strives to highlight how our streets and sidewalks are more than ways to get from A to B. In many ways they literally bring us together and are the fabric of our communities. That being said, come on down and say "Howdy, Neighbor!" It's so easy to get stuck in your own little bubble and Atlanta can seem like a small town, but you never know who you might run into at Streets Alive. Meet someone new and enjoy the best part about ATL, all the rad folks!

Pro Tip #4- Be Nice!

share.pngWhose streets?!? Your streets! aaaaaand their streets! And her streets! and his streets! and that doggo's streets! Atlanta Streets Alive celebrates the community aspect of our city's concrete network so it goes without saying that we should be nice and be respectful of our fellow ATLiens. Take a load off and breathe easy, baby!

Pro Tip #5- Discover Downtown

We love Midtown and are amazed at all the activity going on, but when was the last time you walked around downtown? Downtown is Atlanta's oldest neighborhood and continues to evolve as one of the city's most diverse areas. Check out North Broad street for a killer poké bowl at Fish Bowl Poké or pop in for an expert cappuccino at Condesa Coffee on Auburn Ave. Don't forget to look up as you might not even realize you're at the base of one of Atlanta's iconic skyscrapers. Downtown is happenin' y'all!

Hear What We're Most Excited For

Candidate Row

Have you ever wanted to talk about zoning policy over a game of giant checkers on Peachtree Street? Challenge a mayoral candidate to a bike race? Here's your chance. Marvel at the new Autoeater statue at Peachtree and 10th and meet your candidates for mayor and city council at Candidate Row this Sunday.

Kids Zone with School Board Candidates school_board.jpeg

Atlanta Streets Alive has created a Kids Zone for children, youth, and their advocates. We have numerous partners creating activities for young people between 4th and 5th streets on Peachtree. In addition, Atlanta Public School Board Candidates will be launching the 2:00 parade with any school student who shows up with a bike on South Broad Street, one block South of the Five Points Marta Station. In the Kids Zone, school board candidates will have tables set up for you to visit and talk with them about their platform. We, at ABC, are engaging more with educators and youth in public schools because shifting youth mindsets is critical if we are to restore our city streets to multi-purpose roadways.

Bike Parade

Kick Atlanta Streets Alive off right by raising a ruckus in the Bike Parade starting on South Broad St. right at 2pm! Meet early at 1:30 for bike decorating. We’ll have free decorations for the first 30 people to arrive! We’ll be rolling the entire 3.1 mile route!

All Our Great Sponsor Activities

CLIF Bar will be back with the Xtreme Kid’s Pump Course. Test your mettle against this beastly track in the Kid’s Zone. AAA will be running a photobooth as well as stationary bike speed races where top speeds will be entered into a drawing for gift cards (that’s real cold hard cards, y’all). Joining AAA at 10th and Peachtree will be Georgia Bike Law answering questions and offering advice on biking smart.  Further North, Whole Foods Market will be set up with their ping-pong picnic table along with our own Atlanta Bicycle Coalition bicycle valet at 14th Street near Colony Square.

ASA Radio radio.png

Each Atlanta Streets Alive, ABC along with our partner in crime, Mike Zarin of Zegi, give the people what they really want over Atlanta Streets Alive Radio (aka ASARadio.) Tune your web browser to www.atlantastreetsalive.com/radio from 2-6 and pump it up!

Volunteers

Each year, hundreds of volunteers help us activate Atlanta's streets. This will be third Atlanta Streets Alive in 2017 for many of the dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers you'll encounter on September 24. When you see those Team ASA t-shirts out on the route, please take a moment to give the volunteer a smile or high-five. We appreciate all they do to make Atlanta Streets Alive a safe and fun experience for us all.
