"My confidence to get on an Atlanta street with a bike started with Propel ATL's city biking class."

— Thalia Butts, Bike Class Participant

Challenge → Solution

Challenge: Many streets in Atlanta feel unsafe, and access to walking and biking education is limited, especially in historically underserved neighborhoods.

Solution: Hands-on bike and walk programs, community partnerships, and resources that give residents the skills, confidence, and tools to move safely.

Here's how we do it:

People served through bike classes

2,649 People Served Through Bike Classes

FY24: 1,413 people served in 87 bike classes

FY25: 1,236 people served in 91 bike classes

35 bike safety education community partners in total

72 bikes distributed to Atlanta residents through Bike Family

True Beginners Cycling Classes

Through True Beginners classes with BELOVED, we provided private, free bicycle instruction to women in Atlanta’s restoration program. Participants learn to ride, then keep the bikes to ensure ongoing access to fitness, jobs, education, and medical care.

Atlanta Department of Parks & Recreation Partnership

Atlanta Department of Parks & Recreation Partnership

Shifting Gears returned as an after-school youth cycling-education program in collaboration with the Atlanta Department of Parks & Recreation, serving five locations and 133 students. Focused in neighborhoods along the city’s High-Injury Network, we teach bike handling, road rules, and confidence. 25 students also received bikes at the program’s conclusion to maintain momentum and independence.

Bike Safety Education Partnerships

We collaborated with Refugee Women’s Network, Welcoming Atlanta, Oak Hill, 2 Sparrows Village (serving adults with special needs), The Villages at Carver Family YMCA, and more to bring mobility training and cycling education into neighborhoods historically underserved by transportation options.

Atlanta Streets Alive Communications Partner

Atlanta Streets Alive Communications Partner

Atlanta Streets Alive made a triumphant return, opening 2.5 miles of Atlanta’s signature thoroughfare to walkers, runners, cyclists, skaters, dancers, and much more. While now a bona fide City of Atlanta initiative, we continued to support open streets as the official communications partner.

Safe Routes to School

Our Safe Routes to School classes equipped students, parents, and educators with route planning, encouragement, and safety training, making walking, biking, and rolling to school more accessible and safe.

Atlanta Families for Safe Streets

Atlanta Families for Safe Streets

On November 17, 2024 – World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims – we restarted our Atlanta chapter of Families for Safe Streets, highlighting the urgent need for safer streets and Vision Zero improvements.

League Cycling Instructor Scholarships

In partnership with the City of Decatur, we hosted our LCI (League Cycling Instructor) training seminar, offering a nationally recognized instructor certification and five scholarships, strengthening local capacity to teach bicycle education across communities.

Tactical Urbanism Support

Tactical Urbanism Support for Mozley Park and Oakland City

We built on the creation of Walk ATL, a community-based advocacy and safety training program that helps neighborhood residents learn how to advocate for safe, equitable, and accessible pedestrian spaces. We brought Mozley Park and Oakland City aboard as initial neighborhood partners, and worked with neighborhood leaders to create pedestrian safety action plans that include a tactical urbanism project the community will build with subgrants provided by Propel ATL.
