Challenge → Solution

Challenge: Dangerous streets, unsafe intersections, and lack of protected bike and pedestrian infrastructure put people at risk across Atlanta.

Solution: Propel ATL partners with local communities, advocates for protective infrastructure, and collaborates with city and state agencies to redesign streets, install safer crossings, and create bike and scooter lanes that prioritize safety.

Here’s how we do it:

Memorial Drive Protected Bike/Scoot Lane

Memorial Drive Protected Bike/Scoot Lane

We organized neighborhoods and stakeholders to support a new physically-separated two-direction bike/scoot lane on Memorial Drive. Construction started on the project, connecting Downtown with Reynoldstown, promising safer and more direct access to local businesses, destinations, and neighborhoods.

Safer Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway

We pushed for a safe streets project on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway that added turn lanes and installed safer pedestrian crossings, resulting in 90% fewer pedestrians hit by drivers, and Hollowell dropping from 8th deadliest in the region to 19th most deadly, in just one year.

New Leading Pedestrian Intervals

New Leading Pedestrian Intervals

Our team provided research supporting the addition of Leading Pedestrian Intervals at 25 of the city’s most dangerous crosswalks. These changes at intersections give people walking or using wheelchairs a jump on car traffic. These signals have been shown to reduce the number of crashes resulting in injuries and fatalities by 50 percent.

Atlanta Fatal Crash Review Commission

We also worked with Atlanta City Council to establish the first Atlanta Fatal Crash Review Commission, on which Executive Director Rebecca Serna serves. This group meets quarterly to review every traffic death in the City of Atlanta and identify safety improvements to prevent future crashes.

No Right on Red

No Turn on Red

We advocated for Atlanta City Council legislation prohibiting turns on red lights in Downtown, Midtown, and Castleberry Hill, with implementation planned in 2026.

Decatur Safety Action Plan

We served on the Decatur Safety Working Group that informed the Safety Action Plan.

Peachtree Street Crosswalk

Peachtree Street Crosswalk

In collaboration with the Atlanta City Council, we worked to pass legislation requiring the Atlanta Department of Transportation to reinstall the crosswalk at 225 Peachtree Street. While the Atlanta Department of Transportation has not installed the crosswalk yet, we continue to advocate for the project, which will turn a dangerous gap that contributed to a fatal crash into a safer downtown for pedestrians.

Peters Street Protected Bike Lane

Seeking increased safety, we advocated for the Peters Street bike lane to be redesigned as a parking-protected bike lane. This will be the first such bike lane installed by the Georgia Department of Transportation in Atlanta, coming soon.

Shaded Routes to Transit

In partnership with Trees Atlanta, we planted trees to create a shaded walking route to MARTA bus route 71 Cascade.

Memorial Drive DeKalb Site Visit

We organized a site visit with DeKalb County commissioners and the Georgia Department of Transportation along Memorial Drive in South DeKalb to discuss potential safety improvements for this high-speed, crash-prone stretch.

Safer Cascade Road

Safer Cascade Road

Our advocacy for the Cascade Road Safe Streets project paid off, with construction starting to improve the experience of people using this key local business and neighborhood corridor.
