"Thank you, Propel, for making sure that the station remained open to maintain my access to transit."

— DeJon Tebought, MARTA Rider

Challenge → Solution

Challenge: Limited access, outdated infrastructure, and inequitable service make transit unreliable and difficult to use for many Atlantans.

Solution: Propel ATL engages riders, advocates for equitable transit policies, and partners with agencies to ensure reliable, accessible, and frequent service.

Here's how we do it:

MARTA Five Points Station Advocacy

MARTA Five Points Station Advocacy

In May 2024, our coalition of local leaders, mobility advocates, and transit activists launched a campaign to keep the Five Points MARTA station open to people walking, using wheelchairs and mobility devices, and riding the bus during the project. Just five days into FY25, MARTA announced a pause. MARTA's initial construction plan for the station would have posed a significant threat to the utility of the transit system’s central hub, with potential shutdowns lasting anywhere from 18 months to four years.

Bus Rider Surveys

We worked to elevate the voices of transit riders, especially bus riders. In 2023, powered by volunteers, we began a project to talk with transit riders as they ride or wait for the bus. In 2024, we hired 4 canvassers and surveyed 900+ MARTA bus riders to inform the report, Voices from the Bus, released in fall 2025.

Transit Rider Listening Sessions

Transit Rider Listening Sessions

We hosted two in-person listening sessions with MARTA in attendance, including a Spanish-language session, giving riders a direct opportunity to share feedback and ensuring their voices were part of planning conversations.

New MARTA Bus Network Advocacy

Through rider engagement and advocacy for more equitable, frequent, and reliable bus service, we helped shape MARTA’s “NextGen” bus redesign. In 2024, the MARTA board voted to prioritize more frequent routes to minimize wait times and serve more riders. The proposed network also features more direct routes, on-demand ride service for areas where existing routes may have been cut, and better timing for bus connections.
