Bike lanes are controversial. They often bring up things beyond the immediate transportation project, and lead to a conversation that’s much bigger - gentrification. And yet still,  to talk gentrification, we need to talk racism, classism, and multi-generational poverty. Read more

Both Auburn and Edgewood Avenue were long overdue for repaving. Dips, gaps, and bumps marred the street surface, making it difficult and, in places, downright dangerous, for people on bikes or in wheelchairs to travel safely. All that is changing! Funded by the Renew Atlanta bond approved by voters in 2015, Edgewood and Auburn are being resurfaced and the bike lanes refreshed.  Read more

A recent NPR story titled, “Biking while Black means you’ll probably get stopped more often,” highlighted a recent Minneapolis study showing that Black bicyclists are stopped more often for minor violations than white bicyclists, and escalation resulted in a disproportionate number of citations and even arrests of Blacks on bikes.   Read more

Last week the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) held an open house about a project that would add raised bike lanes and safer crossing to a key segment of Moreland Ave in Little Five Points! The Rolling Town Hall attracted members and supporters from across the city. We were joined by more than 30 candidates and 150 ABC members, and the event was covered by FOX 5 Atlanta and CBS 46 News. If you love transportation, chances are you’ve heard of TransportationCamp. Sessions of TransportationCamp have been held in New York, D.C., and Vancouver to name a few. This year, TransportationCamp South touched down in Atlanta F.K.A. Terminus, Saturday, March 25 at Georgia Tech. So what is TransportationCamp exactly? Is it when outdoorsy urbanists sleep on buses and roast marshmallows over the engine? Not exactly, though a mobile sleepover doesn’t sound like a bad idea. Read more

Barbara Crawford was killed while trying to walk across Memorial Drive from Campbell Street, on her way to the store. The setting sun was bright, casted a warm glow.  Residents of Memorial Drive neighborhoods stood in a circle in the parking lot of Peter’s Food Shop, next to a lawn-mower repair shop. Read more

(Photo Credit: Perimeter Connects) We first learned of the I-85 Collapse during Renew Atlanta’s second public meeting for the DeKalb Avenue Complete Street project. Thankfully, no one was injured. We would like to recognize and thank the first responders who steered rush hour commuters away from danger. The I-85 Collapse deals a blow to regional commerce that flows through our city and it throws a wrench into commutes and trips across the region -- approximately 220,000 vehicles per day. But it’s not the end of the world. It’s a wake-up call. Read more

I was recently asked, "What do you appreciate about working at the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition?" With two seconds of thought and a million possible responses, my immediate response was, "I love how we are continually offered opportunities to learn and grow. I love that our leadership invests in our development."  That couldn't be any more true than recently. Believing in our need to continually grow and keep abreast of best practices and evolving trends, our Director sent me to the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC. As a membership based organization, it's important that our supporters know what they're supporting, where we are, and why we continue to send staff to conferences, symposiums, and perhaps most fun-- Capitol Hill.  So with that, here's a little Q&A snapshot of our most recent continuing education adventures.
